You may remember the day sitting in elementary school at your wooden or Formica desk with your No. 2 pencil and tablet paper and wracking your brain to try to come up with a haiku because your English teacher was making you do it.
Or maybe you don’t recall because you either blocked the traumatic memory or you really enjoyed the assignment.
For those of you who don’t remember, Haiku is a form of Japanese poetry that consists of just three lines written with a syllable pattern of 5-7-5.
It’s usually not a rhyme and often haikus are written about nature, beauty or an experience that evokes feeling.
Popular haiku writers you might recognize include Mayo Angelou and T.S. Elliot.
I remember at first struggling to meet the 5-7-5 rule: I had to count on my fingers the syllables as I said them.
Over the years, I’ve become fairly adept at constructing haikus. (I don’t claim they are any good, but they meet the syllable pattern!)
