Gateways’s annual Labor Day Auction, comprising a blend of several local households, takes place on Monday, September 5th at 10:00 AM. Auction highlights include an exquisite Frank Feather presidential themed cane, items from C.S.M. Ret. Garner (Rowdy) Yates of Letterkenny, an 1864 Harper’s Weekly with Burning of Chambersburg illustrations, an exceptional mix of quality furniture from Victorian to modern, Brian Tucker prints, as well as general antiques and vintage items.

Frank Feather (1877-1951) was a local wood-carver known to travel throughout Franklin and Washington Counties. Skilled at carving, he traded ornate canes, spoons and other objects for food and a place to sleep in the barn. “Over the last 48 years, I have had the privilege to sell many carvings done by Frank Feather. This cane is one of the most exquisite examples of his work,” Auctioneer John F. Kohler, Jr. expresses.

The Feather cane is covered with carvings of US presidents’ names including Washington, Lincoln, Grant, McKinley, Roosevelt and more. In addition to the names, “1902” is inscribed at the base with many of Feather’s characteristic symbols scattered throughout the design.

The annual Labor Day auction also features items from C.S.M. Ret. Garner (Rowdy) Yates. Yates, a Veteran of both the Korean and Vietnam wars, served as Command Sergeant Major at Letterkenny Army Depot from 1978-1981. During the 1960’s, he worked at Letterkenny as a Sergeant in charge of supply (1964) before taking on the role as Sergeant Major for M.I.D.A (1967-1969). Over the years the Yates traveled – collecting and decorating their house. If you visited their home, you could find an eclectic mix of items, carvings and a unique doll collection with world dolls, vintage 1960s dolls and African American dolls.
“A perennial favorite among collectors, dealers and bargain hunters, this Labor Day auction features categories that pivot between vintage and antique – exploring the scope of buying, collecting and re-using items of material culture,” Auctioneer Heather Kohler explains.
The annual Labor Day auction also features Yates’ beloved 1971 Ford 100 Ranger pick-up truck, a beautiful shrunk from Germany over 100 years old, local history books and ephemera, cuckoo clocks, vintage kitchen items as well as a wide array of glassware and china.
