Rare items connected with baseball Hall of Famer Nellie Fox will be among the hobby treasures offered for sale at an Oct. 3 auction in Chambersburg. Gateway Gallery Auction, 643 Kriner Road, is selling items autographed by Fox, as well as vintage baseball cards and other memorabilia.
Fox, inducted posthumously into baseball’s Hall of Fame in 1997, was a native of St. Thomas and a former Chambersburg resident. In addition to Fox’s 1951 rookie card, Gateway will auction a 1962 scorebook containing the autographs of 10 members of the White Sox, including Fox. The game scored was a no-hitter by the Red Sox. A 1964 Topps Giant card signed by Fox also will be sold.
Other Fox items up for auction include store model bats, two Hartland statues, National sports magazines with Nellie on the over from the 1950s and 60s, vintage baseball cards including the 1954 Wilson Wiener and Red Heart, the 1952 Star Cal Decals (along with teammate Billy Pierce), and numerous Topps cards and local Public Opinions featuring coverage on his Hall of Fame election.
The sale will begin at 10 a.m. and also will feature dozens of complete Topps baseball sets, a complete Ted Williams Fleer set from 1959, single cards of baseball stars, partial sets, autographed cards, bats and baseballs, including a bat and rookie card signed by former major leaguer Tom Brookens of Fayetteville. Other items were signed by Hall of Famers Mickey Mantle, Joe DiMaggio, Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, Sandy Koufax, Whitey Ford, Carl Yastrzemski, Mike Schmidt, Cal Ripken Jr. and many others.
A unique item is a coffee-table-sized book featuring dozens of autographs of baseball stars. Fischer Bread wrappers from 1951 — picturing baseball stars from the era — are among the rare items. More recent cards will be available, too, including about 75 uncataloged lots. Items will be available at every price range.
The items are from a private collection, the third of four sales. For a complete listing, view www.gatewayauction.com or call 263-6512 or 1-800-315-3265 for more information. There will be an opportunity to view the items prior to the sale, both online and at the auction location on Friday October 2nd from 3-6 PM
More recent cards will be available, too, including about 75 uncataloged lots sold at after the cataloged items.
